Phuket - GrantHaving been introduced to dinghy sailing by her Dutch mother, Meme Grant (above right at helm) always wanted to sail around the world.
Meme Joined the South African Navy to learn ocean sailing and received her SA Navy sailing colors.
Leaving the Navy to do deliveries she found she was in demand to teach sailing and drive charter fishing boats, becoming the first person, and woman, to pass the exams to qualify as a Cruising Association of South Africa instructor for both sail and motor up to ocean level.
After getting experience skippering a 73 ft sailing vessel she qualified as a Class XII captain with the South African Maritime Authority
Traveling to the UK, she passed her Yacht Master Offshore and Ocean for motor and sail and received her instructor qualification, later becoming a RYA examiner in South Africa.
Running her own sailing school for many years, she specialized in teaching people on their own boats, doing de-liveries and running charters in exotic destinations, co-skippering an all-girls crew in the Beachcomber race, as well as teaching at other schools and examining.
One of her pupils was Louis Van Wyk, they stayed friends after he completed his course and sailed many happy miles together.
Her husband, a marine engineer decided to go cruising and after his stage four melanoma diagnosis they swallowed the anchor in the Azores and started a permaculture project.
Meme studied nutrition to keep Mike alive. To their delight the diet and lifestyle changes worked, he has been tumor free for nearly six years now.
When they heard Louis and his wife Chrisna were starting a boating company Draco Marine Services and Draco Charters in Thailand Phuket, Meme and Mike decided to help as a way of keeping one foot in the sailing door while being able to share their vast sailing experience.
