AV/IT and systems specialist Videoworks presented a series of technologies during the METSTRADE exhibition in November at Amsterdam RAI that speak to the changing demands of yacht owners, ranging from more complete internet coverage at sea to AI systems that can improve energy efficiency on board through smart zoning.

Alongside Kerry Pettitt, Key Account Manager of the Superyacht Division of Speedcast, and Celeste Endrino-Cowley, Director, Maritime and Energy of OneWeb, Videoworks CTO Maurizio Minossi presented the first experiences and opportunities that low earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet connections have provided offshore.

Fast internet connections are becoming more in demand by yacht owners, not only for the opportunity to improve connectivity (which can also mean more reliable link-ups with shore for elements such as running a business from the boat) but also for the increasing desire to use streaming services while on board, for example to be able to enjoy films in high resolution.

Videoworks’ partnership with OneWeb and Speedcast has enabled them to offer guaranteed continuous, efficient and fast connection at up to five times higher speeds than current systems, with service even in open water that is similar to 5G along the coast. During a press conference at METSTRADE the company also announced a partnership with Intellian for the distribution of Dome antennas for VSAT LEO and GEO, but also for Satellite TV. This allows Videoworks to provide a 360° service for all on-board data connection needs.
