London-based yacht designer Philippe Briand has unveiled his latest superyacht design, the 90m/295ft sailing yacht SY300. Created with a traditional sailing two-masted sailing rig and a modern hull with an inverted bow designed to outperform other current sailing yachts of a similar size on the water, SY300 is an eye-catching design with the ultimate in comfort, navigational systems and entertainment.

One of the most notable features of this large sailing yacht is that, unlike many sailing yachts on the market today, she does not need the use of an engine to propel her through the water and is completely wind propelled.

The SY300 has exceptional hydrodynamic hull efficiency that would allow for power to be harnessed via underwater turbines to charge the batteries on board. Under optimal conditions, the SY300 is capable of a cruising speed of 20 knots or greater. If 50% of the energy could be captured at 15 knots, it would be the equivalent of the power produced by a 500 kW generator.

Philippe Briand has had extensive experience over his career in designing carbon fibre masts and rigging, most notably with 67m/219.8ft sailing yacht VERTIGO and 73m/239.5ft SYBARIS. SY300 will have a two-masted design with a foremast reaching 95.3m/312.6ft above the waterline, a 3,560m²/38319ft² upwind sail area, a 6600m²/71041ft² downwind sail area and a spinnaker of 3,500m²/37673ft².

A flybridge offers guests 112m²/1205ft² of space with a length of 14.8m/48.5ft and can accommodate up to 16 guests for alfresco dining beneath a removable bimini, and casual lounging on the L-shaped sofas and sunpads surrounding the forward pool. Both the main deck and lower deck are also fitted with a swimming pool to the aft, with the choice of sun loungers or sunpads for guests to rest and dry off while taking in the panoramic views. On the foredeck, there is a private seating area consisting of sofa/sunbeds and drinks tables where guests can watch the sunset in comfort.

The interior layout can be adjusted to suit an Owner’s requirements, however, the default layout places the Master suite forward with his-and-hers bathrooms, an office and a private terrace. A salon leads through to a port-side formal dining area, with the possibility of a playroom to starboard and a second entrance into the office. The rest of the guest accommodation consists of six en-suite guest cabins and the cabins sleep a crew of 17.

There is also a spa with a Jacuzzi and massage room, and the lower deck full-beam gym has glass sliding doors and steps rising up to the aft deck pool.

Philippe Briand commented on the debut of the design:

“I am a purist at heart. Every Philippe Briand design is guided by the golden principles of balance, efficiency and performance on the water… the SY300 design showcases a yacht with a purpose that is in keeping with the authentic spirit of sailing. I picture it, being ideal for a passionate sailor who wants to stay in touch with the water and the power of the wind. They could even take the helm of the yacht themselves.”
